There There
In his literary debut, Tommy Orange intertwines the stories of 12 Native people in modern day making their roads converge at a huge powwow in Oakland. The book depicts the plight of Native Americans through the years and their continued struggles today.
My favorite part of this book was a section called Interlude. This section is really the meat of the book in my opinion. It is divided into sub-topics such as Powwows, Blood and Last Names. There were so many significant parts of this section that I have re-read it numerous times. Here is just one quote that resonated with me: "We are full-blood, half-breed, quadroon, eighths, sixteenths, thirty-seconds. Undoable math. Insignificant remainders."
The fault of the book , I felt, was the sheer number of characters and the ways they were connected. I kept having to backtrack to keep all the stories straight. It was genius, however, how the stories wound around each other even if a bit difficult to keep up with. It was a difficult book about a difficult subject but one that should be read.
