Girl, Wash Your Face
So I listened to this one because I heard about this book and was curious. I am always looking for ways to improve myself and have read some really great self-help books. This one does not fall into that category. It wasn't horrible and it did have some good ideas (mostly in the first couple of chapters), but there were definitely some things in here that bothered me.
Rachel Hollis structures the book into the lies she has told herself and how she overcame them with things that helped her along the way. Some of her ideas are great like only you can make you happy, not taking no as an answer and not putting things off. This is great advice for women. We are often told that we take second place, that we aren't good enough, etc.
Some of the others were terrible like the story about not defining yourself by a man. Basically she was in a horrible relationship where she was being taken advantage of so she got out of it. Then he came begging and she married him. Now they are happily ever after. Ugh! The other thing I hated was the diet/weight loss stuff. She basically survived on diet pills until she was crazy, but that's ok because she lost a lot of weight!
Most of the book comes off as fairly preachy from a privileged white person's perspective. She never fails to tell the reader how successful she is or how Jesus helped her out. I am sure there are parts of this book that speak to people everywhere. There were definitely parts that spoke to me. But some of it just rubbed me the wrong way too.
