That's Not What Happened
Lee was a survivor of a mass shooting at her high school when she was a freshman. Her best friend Sarah was killed in a bathroom stall holding Lee's hand. A story immediately circulated when a cross necklace was found in the bathroom that is was Sarah's and that she died proclaiming her faith. Sarah's story became sensationalized and soon became "the" story of the shooting. However, Lee and one other survivor that was also in the bathroom knew that wasn't what happened. The other survivor, Kellie, tried to set the story straight at the time but no one believed her. Worse than that, the town turned against her forcing her and her family to move away. Lee kept quiet.
Three years have passed and Lee learns that Sarah's parents are going to write a book about Sarah's death. Lee decides that she needs to set the story straight what really happened it the bathroom on the day of the shooting.
This is a unique take on a school shooting story telling and focusing on the survivors' stories. I was a little reluctant to read it because I find these types of books traumatic, but this was an interesting take and I found the survivors' stories compelling and while they were tragic the book showed their growth and resilience after the trauma of the shooting.
