The Losers Club
Alec wants to spend all of his time reading books. Unfortunately there are things like school and homework and parents who don't appreciate his love of books. His parents and principal give him an ultimatum. Either he quit reading all the time and pay attention in class or he spends the summer in class. He also has to go to after school care every day. Alec assumes that after school care will be a great time to just sit and read for three hours, but the program director has other plans. He has to join the activities or the clubs or do homework. So Alec starts his own club, called the Losers Club, for kids to read. At first it is just Alec and Nina, a new girl in town, but soon other kids want to join the reading club.
How can you not love a book with a kid who is obsessed with books? Alec wants to spend all his time reading and I can relate! He is also dealing with pressure from his parents and teachers just like most kids. And of course there is a bully. Kent picks on Alec for being a bookworm. Then there is Nina. At first Alec asks her in the club because he needs one other person to be official. He likes that she wants to just sit there and read too. But then he starts feeling things and liking Nina more than just a reading partner. Kent does as well. So there is a bit of competition between Alec and Kent that actually does get resolved in a surprising way. I liked the fact that Alec's love of reading eventually leads to a more robust life with friends and an interest in other people.
