Leni's dad was a violent man. Broken after serving in the Viet Nam War, Ernt Allbright was unsettled and constantly looking to find the ideal life for he and his family. When the opportunity came to move his family to the Alaskan frontier, Ernt leapt at the chance. unprepared and broke, the family left all they knew in the lower 48 and moved the wilderness of Alaska.

Rather than helping Ernt, the constant darkness of the Alaskan winters combined with the harsh life and struggle for survival, the conditions of Alaska only magnified Ernt's problems. His daughter, Leni, and her mother were always on the outlook for his mood and wary of his violent outbursts.

This book is a story of survival both in the the wilds of Alaska and in an abusive relationship with a damaged man. It is a story of courage and resilience. I have loved Kristin Hannah's other books and this one is no exception.
