The Bridge Home
After Viji and Rukku escape their abusive father, they find themselves struggling to survive under an abandoned bridge in Chennai, India. They bond with two boys also on the bridge and together they eek out an existence pilfering the trash pits in and around the city.
This heartbreaking book brings to light the difficulties many children face to just survive. While it tackles a very challenging topic this book and others like it are important for children and adults alike to read to gain insight and empathy to those less fortunate than ourselves. Books like The Bridge Home can help forge an understanding of why many might flee similar circumstances to try to find a better life. So while some might shy away from this book and others like it, I feel it is important to recommend and try to put books like this one in the hands of as many people as we can.
