The Lady's Guide to Petticoats and Piracy (Montague Siblings #2)
This was a fun sequel and I really wish there would be more. I loved how Felicity was fearless and resourceful. I would love to know what happens to Felicity and her two best friends. Females of much more substance than normal and full of force, humor and understanding. Making a life of their own, these three chart a path most men couldn't follow.
Check, Please!: #Hockey, Vol. 1
I enjoyed this fun graphic novel. I like hockey and love baking. The idea of college boy who is an athlete and likes to cook, reminds me way to much of my youngest son. However, the crush on his captain is handled nicely and it is fun to meet the varied cast of players. I look forward to the next issue.
Bingo Love
Bingo Love is a story of a same-sex romance that spans over 60 years. A chance meeting at church bingo in 1963 brings Hazel Johnson and Mari McCray together. Through their formative years, these two women develop feelings for each other and finally profess their love for one another.
Darius the Great Is Not Okay
Darius Kellner is a nerd, bullied at school and constantly waiting for his dad's approval. He also suffers from depression. He struggles with his identity being half Persian and being raised in the United States. He is not as in touch with his Persian roots or speak Farsi as well as his little sister Lelah. This all comes to a head when his grandfather in Iran becomes ill and the family travels to Iran to spend some time with time. Darius had never been to Iran, had never met his grandparents and knew little of the customs of the country.
Redshirts
Andrew Dahl's assignment to the Intrepid, the flagship of the Universal Union's space fleet, made him feel very fortunate ... at first. But something's not quite right in the 25th Century. There's an unusually high number of casualties on away missions, problems are solved by a mysterious Box, and the laws of physics and common sense often seem to be ignored. The only conclusion he and his friends arrive at is preposterous. And to make things right, they will have to go on a rogue mission of their own to the most unlikeliest of places.
Out Of My Mind
Eleven-year-old Melody has a photographic memory. Her head is like a video camera that is always recording. Always. And there's no delete button. She's the smartest kid in her whole school - but no one knows it. Most people - her teachers and doctors included - don't think she's capable of learning, and up until recently her school days consisted of listening to the same preschool-level alphabet lessons again and again and again. If only she could speak up, if only she could tell people what she thinks and knows . . . but she can't, because Melody can't talk. She can't walk.
The Hidden Witch
This was as intriguing as the first book. I like how the characters are accepting of their differences and find their friendship realistic. They support each other and encourage one another to go after their dreams, be they normal or not. I look forward to following Aster and Charlie as they become better friends.
Moonstruck, Vol. 1: Magic to Brew
This was an interesting story. The characters are fun and the story entertaining. The mythological characters are intermixed and made for some amusing interactions. I will be on the lookout for another volume.
Werewolf barista Julie and her new girlfriend go on a date to a close-up magic show, but all heck breaks loose when the magician casts a horrible spell on their friend Chet. Now it's up to the team of mythical pals to stop the illicit illusionist before it's too late.
Goodreads
Check Please, Book 1: #Hockey
This is a delightful graphic novel that chronicles a hockey player’s years in school. Told in a series of “vlogs”, I found this book to be creative and inspiring. Any book that can interest me in sports has to be a good one.
The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue
This was an amazing book to listen to mainly because the guy reading had the most sexy British accent that it was easy to picture Monty the rogue. The story is very much how I imagine life in Europe during this very prim and proper time would look and sound like. I had to laugh when they encountered the "pirates" who were much nicer than most of the courtly people they had met. I am now ready to follow Felicity's adventures in the next book.
The Hidden Witch
In this sequel to The Witch Boy, Aster and his family are adjusting to his unconventional talent for witchery; unlike the other boys in his family, he isn't a shapeshifter. He's taking classes with his grandmother and helping to keep an eye on his great-uncle whose corrupted magic wreaked havoc on the family.
Girl Town
Multi-award-winning cartoonist Carolyn Nowak (Lumberjanes) finds powerful truths in fantasy worlds. Her stunning solo debut collection celebrates the ascent of a rising star in comics.
Diana got hurt—a lot—and she's decided to deal with this fact by purchasing a life-sized robot boyfriend. Mary and La-La host a podcast about a movie no one's ever seen. Kelly has dragged her friend Beth out of her comfort zone—and into a day at the fantasy market that neither of them will forget.
Princess of the Silver Woods
This final book in the trilogy may have been my favorite. Petunia is no shrinking violet and I liked the added Red Riding Hood twist. It would be nice to know a little more about the other 9 sisters, but at least we get a glimpse in this one.
When Dimple Met Rishi
I like this story a lot. It was light and fun. Also it seemed to be realistic in how a person must try to rectify family expectations and personal desires. I guess this normal coming of age would be even more stressful for teens of Indian heritage who want to try to stay true to both.
9 From the Nine Worlds (Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard)
This was quick story, but it was a nice addition to the Magnus Chase series. I liked learning more about the supporting characters and more about the Norse legends.
