The Community's Living Room
Last year I read the book The Thriving Library: Successful Strategies for Challenging Times. It’s the kind of book library directors read for fun, and it was professionally speaking just the right book at the right time. There was a quote in this book that has stayed with me for well over a year. Library patron, Leslie Burger, was interviewed about her local library and had this to say “Our Library is the community’s living room and all that implies---a place to learn, a place to socialize, a place for ideas and discussion.” It's such a simple, yet profound statement, and it increased my desire as the director of Missouri River Regional Library to focus on strengthening this role in the communities we serve.
MRRL staff and I embrace our role as our community’s living room---there is a place for everyone here. I firmly believe the premise at the heart of The Thriving Library “Public Libraries are one of the last places that remain where all are warmly welcomed, can learn at their own pace whatever they want or need to know, where they can mingle with people with widely different views and experiences and respectfully discuss their opinions.”
Missouri River Regional Library is that place for you and your family. The Library belongs to each of us. It belongs to our community. Public Libraries have expanded their role and reach nationwide. MRRL has too. We have so much to offer no matter what stage of life you are currently in. If you use this Library regularly, tell a friend what you love about the Library. If you are reading this now and haven’t been here for awhile, give us a chance to show you what a 21st century library is all about. Our books, ebooks, classes, streaming services, and programs are here for you. Let our new website be your guide as you discover a place where you cannot only indulge your love of reading, but find a place where you can learn a new skill, attend a film night, expand your social network, or even practice yoga! Let us help you reach your best potential here at the Library.
