Description

Helen Stephens, one of America's premier athletes, set records and made Missouri and America proud at the 1936 Olympics and in athletic events throughout her long and storied career. Sharon Kinney Hanson spent several years interviewing Stephens, her colleagues, coach, friends and family members, and had access to Stephens' letters and diaries. Her research culminated in the authorized biography The Life of Helen Stephens: The Fulton Flash. Stephens enjoyed acclaim as the first owner and manager of a basketball team, and as a coach, mentor and role model to many female athletes. Her life was not without controversy and drama, including gender challenges, which Hanson will address in her program. Stephens is one of the three main characters in Fast Girls, the 2020 Capital READ.  A link will be posted here the day of the event in order to join the presentation.
