Building Block Award announced

The children of Missouri (and neighboring states) have spoken, selecting Bye-Bye Big Bad Bullybug by Ed Emberley as the winner of the 2009 Missouri Building Block Picture Book Award. Over 15,000 preschoolers and kindergarteners participated this year. Bye-Bye Big Bad Bullybug was the overwhelming choice, receiving 3,277 votes. Wolf’s Coming by John Kulka finished second with 2,553 votes while Dinosaur vs. Bedtime by Bob Shea finished third with 1,884 votes.

Bye-Bye Big Bad Bullybug is the story of an alien bug that comes to Earth and threatens and intimidates itty-bitty baby bugs. He receives his comeuppance when he is stepped on by a large sneaker. The Building Block committee does not feel qualified to speculate about what this fondness for a book about bug squashing says about the youth of Missouri.
